POSITION: Probationary Police Officer DEPARTMENT: Police ACCOUNTABLE TO: Patrol Sergeant SUMMARY OF WORK: This is a trainee position that has a one year probationary period. Performs traffic control, enforces laws, protects life and property, makes arrests, helps prevent crime, investigates crimes, keeps the peace, prepares reports, testifies in court cases and may perform animal control duties. POSITIONS, RATE OF PAY AND SHIFTS: POSITION: Full time (40 hrs. per week) Permanent RATE OF PAY: $17.00 ($.50 increase after probation) BENEFITS: $600.00 Clothing allowance, PERS retirement and health insurance. OVERTIME: TBD WORKING HOURS/WEEK: Rotating shifts: nights, weekends and holidays. JOB CHARACTERISTICS: Nature of work: This position performs technical law-enforcement duties which may include exposure to hazardous conditions, potentially life-threatening situations and contact with individuals who may be uncooperative and dangerous. Must adhere to safety rules and procedures; position may be stressful. Deals with sensitive information and adheres to standards of confidentiality. Physical stamina and the ability to work long hours, changing shifts and holidays are essential. This position is subject to call-out at any time. Personal Contacts: Continual contact with public; regular contact and coordination of duties with department personnel. Supervision Received: Work is supervised directly; occasionally there is little to no supervision. JOB ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE: Performs traffic-control duties; patrols city by foot, bicycle or vehicle; enforces traffic and parking regulations; assists public as requested; renders first-aid assistance; collects evidence; performs drug and alcohol tests; investigates criminal acts and suspicious activity in residential and business districts; responds to and investigates complaints, disturbances, domestic calls, vandalism, burglaries, illegal entries, drug abuse reports, assaults, homicides, alarms and automobile accidents. Prepares and submits reports including but not limited to Arrest, Offense, Misdemeanor, Felony, Juvenile, DUI, Accident; issues citations; detains and arrests criminal suspects; enforces state and local laws; maintains and services vehicle and equipment (radar, radio, firearms, chemical mace, handcuffs, fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, and Intoxilyzer). Assists in criminal prosecutions; makes court appearances and provides sworn testimony; appears as a witness at hearings and court proceedings; collects and records bond money, past due city water bills and forfeitures; attends various training classes and remains well informed of changes in laws. Maintains physical conditioning; performs animal control duties including but not limited to animal licensing, stray animal pick-up, investigation of animal bites and noise complaints. Performs varied public-relations duties, educational efforts and crime prevention programs; performs crowd-control duties; assists ambulances; performs other related duties as required. This position will occasionally act as; animal warden, court bailiff, transport prisoners and serve legal papers. JOB REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge: This position requires a working knowledge of: city ordinances, state and federal laws; departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures; city geography and jurisdiction boundaries; arrest procedures and the rights of the accused; rules of evidence; and crime scene investigation. Skills: This position requires skills in the use of firearms and chemical agents, the operation of departmental vehicles and equipment and First-aid and CPR techniques. Abilities: This position requires the ability to: communicate effectively orally and in writing; follow verbal and written instruction; establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors and the public; think quickly and take proper action; remain calm in stressful situations; demonstrate physical strength and agility to perform job, adhere to standards of confidentiality, integrity, impartiality and tact; deal with situations in a firm and courteous manner. Other Requirements: This position requires possession of a valid Montana driver¡¦s license. Employee must have a reliable means of transportation. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: The above knowledge, skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience; a high school diploma or GED, and certification from the Montana POST Graduate or equivalent. Some college course work is preferable. JOB PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: Evaluation of this position is based primarily upon performance of the preceding requirements and duties.
